You think your employees are accident-prone? It could be worse. Here are seven of the daftest IT mishaps that we’ve heard about. And these are just the ones that got reported!

Mama Mia!

A woman in Padova, Italy, put her laptop on the roof of her car and forgot about it. She climbed in and roared away in true Italian style, only to see her precious laptop appear briefly in her rear window before crashing down onto the road behind her. Come on, who hasn’t left something on the roof of the car while rummaging for their keys and then forgotten about it? But it gets better. In her hurry to retrieve the situation, she slammed the car into reverse and – you guessed it – ran right over the laptop, finishing off any lingering chances of survival it might have had from the initial impact.

A big splash

A man in California had a similar mishap when he left his phone on the roof of the car. His reaction was more calm, however. Leaving the car where it was, he walked back and picked up his phone before anyone could run over it and was delighted to find it only had a small crack in the corner of the screen. The car, however, was less fortunate. He’d forgotten to apply the handbrake and could only watch as it rolled down a hill, crashed through a fence and landed in a river! Still, at least he was able to call for a tow truck.

Crocs away!

An engineer in India called his boss one day claiming that he couldn’t complete his day’s work on a bridge project in West Bengal. The reason? His tablet had been snatched out of his hand and swallowed whole by a crocodile. The modern-day equivalent of a prayer book stopping a bullet, it seemed the croc had been after the engineer but the tablet had got between them, saving his life and leaving the croc disappointed. Or maybe the croc’s doc had prescribed one tablet a day between meals.

Cowabunga!

When a farmer in Devon put in an insurance claim for a lost phone, the claims assistant did not think much of it – until he told her it was inside one of his cows! He’d been helping the cow with a rather complex birth and had decided he needed to use the torch app to get a better look. Next thing he knew, the phone had slipped out of his hand, and while the calf was delivered safely, the phone wasn’t. How could he be sure it was in there? He could hear it ringing! A few days later the farmer called back to cancel the claim.

Wrong kind of cookies?

Where do you hide your laptop for safekeeping when you go away on holiday? Under the bed? In the loft? On top of a wardrobe? A man in Arnhem, Holland, had the clever idea of leaving it in the oven. I mean, what burglar thinks to look in the oven? Unfortunately, he forgot to share his secret with his wife, who came home early and decided to do some baking. In preheating the oven, she managed to cook her husband’s computer to a crisp. Roast RAM anyone?

Hot desking gone mad

Still on the cooking theme, a woman in Kyoto, Japan, had a meltdown, literally, when she chose to charge her tablet in the kitchen overnight. The hotplate seemed like a solid, level surface to place it on, so there she put it. Only trouble was she plugged it into the same multiplug, so when she flicked the switch on the wall socket, it wasn’t just the tablet that lit up. In the morning, her nose led her straight to the kitchen where the smell of sizzling silicon signified the liquid remains of her tablet. Delicious!

Missing you x

A woman in Lyon, France, asked her boss for a new phone after hers had fallen fourteen floors from the window of her flat. When asked how the phone had come to fall from the window, she said it hadn’t fallen so much as been thrown. Pressed on why she had thrown her phone out of the window, she admitted she’d been aiming at her boyfriend and missed. And why had she wanted to hit her boyfriend. Because she’d caught him in bed with her boss’ wife! Ah, la belle France!
