What is a rugged device?
A rugged device is a type of electronic device designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions. Here are some key characteristics:
Durability:
As the name suggests, rugged devices are built to withstand shocks, vibrations, drops, and extreme temperatures. They often have reinforced casings, shock-absorbing materials, and robust internal components. Rugged devices often feature features like sealed connectors, reinforced screens, and durable materials to withstand harsh conditions.
Water and Dust Resistance:
Many rugged devices are designed to be water-resistant or even waterproof, and they are typically resistant to dust and other particulates.
Extreme Temperature Tolerance:
They can operate reliably in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, making them suitable for use in a wide range of environments.
Examples of rugged devices include:
- Rugged smartphones and tablets: Used in construction, field service, and other demanding industries.
- Industrial computers: Used in manufacturing, transportation, and other industrial settings.
- Military-grade devices: Designed for use in extreme environments, such as battlefields and military operations.
Rugged devices are essential in industries where reliability and durability are critical, such as construction, manufacturing, transportation, military, and emergency services.
Rugged device certifications explained: IP ratings and MIL-STD standards
Rugged device certifications provide crucial assurance regarding the durability and reliability of these devices in demanding environments. Two of the most prominent certifications are IP Ratings and MIL-STD Standards.
IP ratings
IP Ratings (Ingress Protection) are internationally recognised standards that define the level of protection against the ingress of solid particles (dust) and liquids (water). The rating typically consists of two digits: the first digit indicates protection against solid particles (dust), while the second digit indicates protection against water.
For example, an IP68 rating signifies complete protection against dust ingress and the ability to withstand continuous immersion in water at specified depths and durations. Higher IP ratings generally indicate greater levels of protection against dust and water.
Does IP ratings mean a device is waterproof?
Not exactly. An IP rating does not necessarily mean a device is “waterproof.”
IP ratings are standardised, internationally recognised codes that classify the levels of protection provided by enclosures against the ingress of foreign bodies (like dust) and water.
An IP rating consists of two digits: The First Digit: Indicates the level of protection against the ingress of solid particles (dust). The Second Digit: Indicates the level of protection against water ingress.
“Waterproof” is not a precise term. While higher IP ratings, such as IP67 and IP68, offer significant water resistance, they don’t guarantee complete “waterproofness” in all situations.
When it comes to understanding an IP rating, you have to remember that specifics matter, the level of water resistance varies significantly depending on the specific IP rating. In addition, IP ratings are determined under specific laboratory conditions. Real-world performance may vary.
In any case, always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for specific guidelines on water resistance and limitations.
MIL- STD standards
MIL-STD-810H is a rigorous military standard that outlines a series of environmental tests designed to assess the durability of equipment under extreme conditions. These tests cover a wide range of environmental factors, including temperature extremes (high and low temperatures, thermal shock), humidity, shock and vibration, rain and water, sand and dust, and altitude.
Devices that successfully pass these stringent tests are certified to meet the MIL-STD-810H standard, demonstrating their ability to withstand harsh environments and operate reliably under demanding conditions.
These certifications provide valuable information to consumers, allowing them to make informed decisions when selecting rugged devices that meet their specific needs and operational requirements.
Do I need devices that have these standards?
If you work within an industry that requires the use of a device in non-standard situations or environments, then it is definitely recommended to use rugged devices that pass the aforementioned certifications.
Most if not all modern smartphones have an IP rating as standard. The difference with rugged devices is that their level of protection is usually greater.
Do rugged devices last longer than regular devices?
Generally, yes. Rugged devices can last longer than regular devices. Rugged devices are designed to withstand harsh environments and have a significantly longer lifespan than standard consumer electronics.
While the exact lifespan can vary depending on factors like usage patterns, environmental conditions, and the quality of the device itself, many rugged devices can last three to five years or even longer with proper care and maintenance.
Here’s why:
- Robust Construction: Rugged devices are built with durable materials and reinforced casings to withstand drops, shocks, and vibrations.
- Environmental Resistance: Features like water and dust resistance, and the ability to operate in extreme temperatures, enhance their longevity in challenging environments.
- High-Quality Components: Rugged devices often utilise higher quality components designed for increased durability and longevity.
However, it’s important to note that this is a general estimate. Factors like:
- Intensity of Use: Frequent drops, exposure to extreme temperatures (in some cases), and heavy use can shorten the lifespan.
- Maintenance: Regular cleaning, software updates, and proper care can significantly extend the lifespan of a rugged device.
- Technological Advancements: As technology evolves, older devices may become obsolete or unsupported, even if they are still functional.
By investing in a high-quality rugged device and practicing proper care and maintenance, you can significantly extend its lifespan and maximise your return on investment.
Can a regular device be used instead of a rugged device?
While regular devices might seem like a cost-effective alternative to rugged devices in some situations, using them in demanding environments can lead to significant drawbacks. Rugged devices have much more longevity when pitted against consumer models. If you’re in need of a repair or replacement, consumer-marketed devices often require more time. If timing is crucial, opting for ruggedness could make or break a project.
Regular devices are not designed to withstand the rigors of harsh environments. They are more susceptible to damage from drops, vibrations, extreme temperatures, dust, and water. This leads to frequent repairs and replacements.
As a result of the damage to a regular device, it can result in data loss, system failures, and significant downtime, disrupting workflows and impacting productivity. Rugged devices are built with protection in mind, meaning that data has a greater chance of being successfully recovered than a commercial device. If protecting your data in challenging environments, rugged is the clear winner.
In hazardous environments, the failure of a non-rugged device can pose safety risks to workers. For example, a device that fails in a construction zone or on an oil rig could have serious consequences.
Frequent repairs and downtime associated with using regular devices in demanding environments can significantly reduce worker productivity and efficiency.
Rugged devices often incorporate specialised features, such as enhanced durability, extended battery life, and improved data security, which are crucial in many demanding applications.
