What to Do If Your Rugged Tablet Gets Wet?

Even though rugged tablets are built to withstand tough conditions, water damage can still be a serious threat. We must clarify, that a bit of rain, sweaty or wet hands won’t necessarily do anything to the device. But submersion can seriously affect it.

Taking the following steps can significantly increase your chances of saving your device and avoiding a costly replacement:

What to do immediately

1. Get it out of the water! The longer it’s submerged, the greater the risk of damage.   
2. Power it down IMMEDIATELY. Do NOT try to turn it on to see if it still works. This runs the risk of causing an electric shock, use rubber gloves if available if you absolutely have to check if it still works. 
3. Remove any case, covers, or accessories. This will help with the drying process.
4. If the battery is removable (check your user manual), remove it. This can interrupt any electrical current and prevent further damage. Many modern rugged tablets have non-removable batteries, regardless, double check if you can!

The drying process 

1. Gently wipe down the tablet with a soft, lint-free cloth. Don’t rub vigorously, just gently absorb as much moisture as possible.
2. Find a dry, well-ventilated place. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources, as these can damage the internal components.
3. Consider the rice trick (with caution). Some people recommend placing the tablet in a bowl or bag of uncooked rice, as rice is a good absorbent. However, be aware that rice dust can sometimes get into the device, so this method is not without its risks.
4. Wait it out. This is the hardest part. It’s crucial to let the tablet dry completely, and this can take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours (or even longer). Don’t be tempted to turn it on before you’re absolutely certain it’s dry. Don’t use a hairdryer on the device, as it can cause condensation, possibly damaging the device further internally.

After the wait:

1. Inspect carefully. Check for any signs of corrosion or damage.
2. Try turning it on. If it powers on, great! If not, don’t keep trying.
3. Back up your data immediately. If the tablet works, back up any important data as soon as possible, as there may be internal damage that could cause it to fail later.

What to remember 

If the tablet was submerged in saltwater, rinse it thoroughly with fresh water before drying it. Salt can cause corrosion and more serious damage due to the minerals of salt interfering with internal connections etc.

Although we mentioned hairdryers, other heating devices etc such as ovens, or radiators are a no-no. They can warp the components and cause irreparable damage.
